CutUp: Non-linear Harbinger Systems

For one weekend only, CutUp will occupy the expansive new artists space 'The James Taylor Gallery' in Hackney. Continuing their internationally recognised disruptive practice, the collective of artists and musicians return to London for a performance night and two day exhibition. Taking in large-scale installations, process based film work and electronic auto-destruction, Non-linear Harbinger Systems promises to be an intoxicating and unpredictable event with further exploration into the socio-political artwork of CutUp.

Moving into new territories of intervention CutUp explore and expand upon the ideas formed by the group. Among other materials CutUp have used collaged advertising to question the spectacular society with images of passive and momentary disquiet; now they guide us through a series of direct experiences, demanding attention with action and confrontation.

The evening will begin in the reception area with the presentation of reductive/constructive film and video works alongside new collage work made from each published copy of the January 2009 METRO newspaper. Viewers will then be led into the main garage space of the James Taylor building...
A loud tone reverberates around the space, seeming to continually drop an octave. The sound emanates from a car positioned next to an unmanned drum kit.
A large air balloon made from discarded plastic bags stands next to the vehicle, the Balloon supports a handmade chair designed for one passenger. On the opposite side of the space stands a structure of household washing machines.
The cycle begins. The drummer takes his seat and the car doors open.

Although the exhibition runs for a weekend, February 27 will be the only chance to witness the performances. The exhibition continues through the space with further installations and further film works.

To close the performance evening, CutUp will perform their hand built sequencer unit, creating a collage of sounds via a billboard punctured with speakers. The unit was first shown at Seventeen Gallery and then performed at the Louise T. Blouin Institute, with forthcoming shows across Europe.
