For My Part is the inaugural exhibition at The James Taylor Gallery, a sprawling, multi-roomed space in Hackney, East London.
Formerly a Victorian factory, squat, china warehouse and film location, the shifting identities of this extensive space are highly evident. Fourteen artists were asked to produce work to contend with the building 'as is', rather than to see these distinctive features, and its grand scale, as obstacles.
Artists working in video, photography, sculpture, installation and painting were given a limited proposal-to-show timeframe to install the exhibition in 10,000 square feet of space. This particular constraint is a necessity rather than a choice - the building is subject to several demolition orders, making clear the need to put it to use before it is too late.
These limitations are by no means negatives, just indicative of a shift in the manner to which non-commercial shows must be produced. As the artists navigate one another and the challenges inherent to the space, unexpected outcomes arise.
