Matter Of Time
20 Nov 2008 - 30 Nov 2008
A china wholesaler, a butchers and even a storage garage; The James Taylor building has been subjected to many transformations since its establishment in the heart of Hackney during the Victorian era. Naturally, it is fitting that the monumental 10,000-square-feet building's definitive purpose, before its arranged destruction early next year, echoes the proverbial pun which implies all derelict warehouses will one day become art galleries.
Five Storey Projects is pleased to present Matter of Time , a group exhibition of selected new works by fifteen artists. The building itself has spawned the utilitarian context of a theme and encouraged active engagement with its spatiality, its raw material state, its history and its location. The artists' interpretations of the concept created various distinct and exciting outcomes.
Among the featured artists, Cecile Azoulay chooses to experiment with elements from the deterioration of time and tradition through manipulations of manufactured objects set within the building's framework. Manifestations of manipulation, composed as a three-part installation, also emerge through an intervention in photography, proposed landscapes, and performative tours produced by Clive A Brandon. Craig Andrews re-represents the seductive and expansive space by revealing unseen scenarios and creating alternative hypothesises that transform the original setting. PaulMart experiments with sculptural language, questioning the nostalgia and unobtrusive objects inherent in history and architecture. 'They Are Here', in collaboration with a child's imagination, replicate interwoven fragments of real and idealized futures to disruptively occupy the vacant space. Fantasy and reality also mingle with the adjacent neighbourhood's abandoned courtyard to produce Bianca Brunner's photographic Hidden and White Rabbit. In parallel, Elisabetta Alazraki interacts directly with the building itself by revealing a playful installation that, in its symmetrically ordered oscillation made of randomly co-existent building elements, generates irony towards the near future renovations of the dilapidated James Taylor building.
Various events will be held during the ten day-long exhibition which will give rise to a sense of volatility and mutability in order to provide a non-static element to the exhibition. The events are as follows:
Sound performance by Sunshine Republic on the private view at 8 pm, Thurs 20th.
Walks in the area by Clive A Brandon at 1 & 4 pm every Sat and Sun throughout the exhibition
Artist talk by David Raymond Conroy at 2 pm, Sun 23rd.
Peter Suchin and Rachel Withers in conversation about Matter of Time at 2.30 pm on Sun 30th.
